Orthopaedic surgery encompasses any surgery that is related to bones or joints. It includes procedures such as fracture repairs, ligament repairs and spinal surgery to name a few. The most common orthopaedic surgeries we see in general practice are:

• Cranial cruciate ligament repair

• Fracture (broken bone) repair

• Amputations for severe injuries or bone cancer cases

Some procedures can be done at Bakers Hill Veterinary Hospital, but for some of the more complicated or specialised procedures, we will recommend a specialist surgeon at one of the referral centres in Perth. Our veterinarians will assess each case individually and provide the best advice for you and your pet.

Generally after orthopaedic operations, pets can go home once they are up, walking & their pain is under control.  If we have any concerns about the recovery of your pet, we may advise further hospitalisation to monitor your pet closely.

With orthopaedic surgeries (as it is with all surgeries) it is important to follow the discharge instructions given.  Most pets need to be kept on a restricted exercise regime for a period of time, generally up to 6 weeks, depending on what surgery they have undergone.  It is important to monitor the wound & contact us if you are at all worried.  All medication (including pain relief) must be given to the end of its course & all recommended post-surgical checks must be followed.  If your pet has a bandage, follow up checks will be required & the bandage may need to be replaced on a regular basis.

Post-operative X-rays generally are often required 6-8 weeks after the surgery to check on the progress of the bone healing.  It must be remembered that bone healing is a natural process and as such there is normal variation with the speed of healing between animals.
